Why Reading Matters: Important Facts About Reading for Kids

Podcast Episode

Episode Description

Why Reading Matters: Important Facts About Reading for Kids

Reading is more than a school subject—it is one of the most important skills a child can develop. Strong reading skills help children succeed academically, communicate confidently, build imagination, and become lifelong learners.

Reading Builds the Foundation for Learning

Children use reading in nearly every subject. Whether they are solving a math word problem, conducting a science experiment, studying history, or following directions, strong reading skills help them understand what they are learning.

When children struggle with reading, that challenge can affect their performance across multiple subjects.

Reading Helps Build Vocabulary

The more children read, the more words they are exposed to. Books introduce children to new vocabulary, ideas, places, cultures, and experiences.

A strong vocabulary can help children:

  • Communicate more clearly.
  • Improve their writing.
  • Better understand classroom lessons.
  • Express their thoughts and feelings.
  • Build confidence when speaking.

Reading Strengthens Comprehension

Reading is not simply recognizing words. Children must also understand, remember, question, and think about what they are reading.

Parents and educators can strengthen comprehension by asking questions such as:

What happened in the story?

Why do you think the character made that decision?

What do you think will happen next?

What was the main idea?

What did you learn from what you read?

These conversations help children become deeper thinkers.

Reading Encourages Imagination and Creativity

Books allow children to explore places they may never have visited and experience life through someone else's perspective.

Reading encourages children to imagine possibilities, solve problems creatively, and develop their own ideas.

Reading Builds Confidence

Every time a child learns a new word, finishes a book, understands a difficult passage, or discovers something new, they experience success.

Those small victories matter.

A confident reader is more likely to participate in class, ask questions, explore new subjects, and take responsibility for learning.

Reading Supports Social and Emotional Development

Stories introduce children to different emotions, relationships, challenges, and experiences. Reading about characters who solve problems, make mistakes, overcome obstacles, and show kindness can help children better understand themselves and others.

Books can help children develop:

  • Empathy
  • Patience
  • Curiosity
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Emotional awareness
  • Respect for different perspectives

Reading at Home Makes a Difference

Families are important partners in developing strong readers.

Reading does not have to feel like homework. Families can make reading part of everyday life by reading bedtime stories, visiting the library, reading recipes together, talking about books, allowing children to select books that interest them, and letting children see adults reading.

Even a few minutes of focused reading each day can help establish a positive reading routine.

Don't Stop Reading to Older Children

Reading aloud is not only for beginning readers.

Older elementary and middle school students can also benefit from listening to interesting books, discussing what they read, learning new vocabulary, and exploring more challenging topics with adults.

As children grow, the conversation around reading should grow with them.

Reading Today Creates Opportunities Tomorrow

Strong readers are better prepared to become strong students, graduates, employees, leaders, and informed members of their communities.

Improving reading achievement requires everyone—students, parents, teachers, administrators, school boards, and communities—to remain focused on literacy from the early grades through graduation.

The Most Important Fact

A child who learns to love reading gains a tool they can use for the rest of their life.

Every book matters.
Every page matters.
Every child matters.

Our Challenge to Families

Make reading visible in your home.

Set aside time to read with your child. Ask what they are reading. Visit the library. Celebrate progress. Encourage questions. Most importantly, remind children that becoming a strong reader takes practice.

When we build strong readers, we build stronger students and stronger futures.
